As of October 31, 2011, there were 2,215 VLTs in Nova Scotia, not including those on First Nations reserves.
VLTs are offered as part of the entertainment mix in liquor-licensed establishments only. This includes bars, lounges, cabarets, legions, golf and curling clubs and other such liquor-licensed establishments.
There are 342 retailers throughout the Province including 207 private organizations, 41 community-minded groups and 97 Royal Canadian Legions, not including First Nations.
The majority of VLTs have a prize payout of 92-95%. This means that 92-95% of the amount played is paid out in prizes.
The three most popular games are Magic Merlin, Lucky Larry Lobster Mania and 7's Wild.
Nova Scotia's VLT retailers receive a gross commission rate of 25% for video lottery receipts up to $400,000 and 15% on video lottery receipts over $400,000. Their net commission, after they pay HST and make a contribution to Gambling Awareness Nova Scotia, is 21.5% up to the $400,000 mark and then it is approximately 12.9%.
VLTs on First Nations reserves are administered by the Office of Aboriginal Affairs not by the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation. NSGC, through Atlantic Lottery, provides VLTs to bands who have entered into gaming agreements with the Province.
