Bingo Seminars Helping Charities Help Communities

Tuesday, December 18, 2007

Bingo is an important part of the social fabric of Nova Scotia. As a means for raising funds for valuable programs and important causes, bingo is an activity that continues to make a difference in this Province.

That’s why the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation (NSGC) continued its strategic effort of delivering bingo seminars to charities in Nova Scotia across the Province for a second year. In December 2007, six communities and more than 200 charity representatives benefited from these essential “bingo-building” resources.

“Bingo is a significant fundraising tool for a variety of community organizations,” says Marie Mullally, President and CEO of NSGC. “The goal of the seminars is to provide charities with access to relevant and useful information that they can take directly back to their bingos. This all comes back to helping charities further help their communities.”

Designed to help charities improve their bingos, guest speakers spoke on topics including promotions, prize structure and regulations. NSGC also sponsored 30 charity representatives to receive emergency first aid training through the Canadian Red Cross.

The seminars were held in Dartmouth, Sydney, Port Hawkesbury, New Glasgow, Truro and Shelburne between December 1 and December 7 as part of NSGC’s Charitable Sector Support Program; a commitment to helping Nova Scotian communities and the charitable sector.

Feedback from this year’s seminars shows that participants found the seminars to be useful and informative.  Ninety-five per cent of participants gave a good to excellent rating of the helpfulness of the information presented. And 92 per cent said they would attend another seminar in the future.

“The Bingo Seminar was informative and a great place to exchange ideas,” says Charles Blake, Bingo Chair of the Friday Night Bingo at the Yarmouth Lions Club. “It will help make our bingos more efficient and profitable.”

Contributing to communities is an important part of what NSGC does. And helping charities help their communities through successful fundraising bingos will continue to be a priority.
