New coaches hired for Nova Scotia. More competitive athletes supported. And more sport participation programs funded across the Province. Today, at Nova Scotia’s Sport Hall of Fame, the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation (NSGC) showed its “support for sport” when it presented $200,000 to the Nova Scotia Amateur Sport Fund as part of its Support 4 Sport program.
Support 4 Sport is a suite of ticket lottery products where 100% of the money raised goes to fund amateur sport in Nova Scotia. The $200,000 presented today was part of the money raised from a Support 4 Sport scratch ticket that was launched in August 2006.
Surrounded by athletes and athletic supporters, NSGC President and CEO, Marie Mullally, presented the cheque.
“At NSGC, we want to do our part to help Nova Scotians be healthy and competitive at home and on the world stage. We want to give every Nova Scotian the opportunity to be successful from playground to podium,” said Mullally. “With this first cheque of $200,000 and the continued funding from the Support 4 Sport program and its new tickets, our athletes and coaches will have opportunities unlike anything ever experienced in this Province.”
Jamie Ferguson, CEO of Sport Nova Scotia, and Ken Bagnell, President of the Canadian Sports Centre Atlantic,, accepted the cheque on behalf of the Sport Nova Scotia Amateur Sport Fund.
“We applaud the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation for recognizing the value of sport, creating opportunities for excellence and helping to foster a culture of sport in Nova Scotia,” said Ferguson. “Sport brings so much to communities through its many positive benefits to areas such as health, education and social development. This funding means sport in Nova Scotia will be more inclusive, more competitive and more successful. It will also allow more of our athletes and coaches to stay and train in Nova Scotia, and in the end, give back to their own communities.”
“Through its Support 4 Sport program, NSGC has helped fuel the desires, broaden the dreams and encourage the visions of athletes across the Province,” said Ken Bagnell. “With this $200,000 we will be able to hire three new coaches, support tangible sport participation programs across the Province; and fund the dreams of ten Nova Scotia athletes who otherwise would not have received funding. Personally, I believe the Support 4 Sport program is really the best thing to happen to sport in Nova Scotia in a very long time.”
All profits from all Support 4 Sport branded lottery products go directly to sport in Nova Scotia. The program will raise at least $2 million a year and is the biggest funding initiative to ever benefit Sport Nova Scotia. This money will be used to buy sports equipment, create and enhance recreation/participation programming for all ages, support performance training programs for competitive athletes and hire coaches at all levels.
The new suite of Support 4 Sport tickets will be launched in May 2007 and will be sold in Atlantic Lottery retail locations across Atlantic Canada. As with all ALC products, these games are only available for sale to adults 19 years of age and older.
