Truro is a strong community, especially when it comes to helping its own. The Northern District Red Cross in Truro has been a cornerstone of community support for many years, which is why more than 200 people flocked to the Ponderosa Tap n’ Grill on Friday, March 30 to take part in a Monte Carlo casino-style fundraiser.
As lead supporters, the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation (NSGC) and Casino Nova Scotia contributed to the event by offering volunteer, equipment and financial support. This support is part of NSGC’s Charitable Sector Support Program, a commitment to help Nova Scotian communities and the charitable sector.
Accompanied by a dazzling casino showgirl, the event kicked off with live music and more than 10 blackjack and crown and anchor tables. Other games of chance included a balloon pop and a 50/50 draw, which saw the winner take home a $950 prize. In total, the people of Truro helped raise more than $14,500 to support local emergency and disaster services of the Red Cross.
“The total this year was more than double that of a comparable event in 2006 – it’s a very heartwarming display of community support,” said Mona O’Brien of the Northern District Red Cross office in Truro. “All funds raised are used to support our emergency and disaster services.”
“Giving back to the community is an important part of what we do,” said Marie Mullally, President and CEO of NSGC. “Using our expertise and infrastructure to help charities support their good causes is such a rewarding opportunity.”
In addition to donating time and expertise, last year NSGC and its operators gave almost one million dollars to good causes in communities across the province.
The “Monte Carlo” fundraiser is a charitable gaming event for adults over 19 years of age and is licensed by the Alcohol and Gaming Division of the Department of Environment and Labour.
