Gaming Control Act

In 1995, Nova Scotia modernized its gaming legislation by introducing the Gaming Control Act. The Act established for the first time two distinct and separate organizations to handle the responsibility of gaming: one agency to manage the business, one to regulate. Nova Scotia is the only Province in the Atlantic region operating under such a regime.

Part I of the Act created the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation, a Crown corporation to carry out the business of gaming, which includes ticket lotteries, video lotteries and casinos. Part II of the Act established the Nova Scotia Alcohol and Gaming Division to regulate, study and evaluate gaming in the Province.

Prior to the introduction of the Gaming Control Act in 1995, the business, regulation and study of gaming all fell under the mandate of the Nova Scotia Lottery Commission. Similar structures continue in the other three Atlantic provinces.
