Nova Scotia's Gaming Industry

In Nova Scotia, the people are ultimately the shareholders of the gaming industry. The provincial government sets the overall direction for regulated gaming and the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation (NSGC), a Crown corporation governed by the provincial Gaming Control Act, carries out the day-to-day business of gaming.

NSGC's role is to ensure the gaming industry is as socially responsible as possible, while generating reasonable profits for the provincial government which go directly into Nova Scotia's general revenues to help pay for important programs, services and infrastructure. In 2010-11, $141.6 million was paid to the Province which, to provide context, would pay for the construction of 11 elementary schools, the twinning of 46 kilometres of 100-series highway or the paving of 459 kilometres of secondary highway in Nova Scotia

The Alcohol and Gaming Division (AGD) of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations regulates and monitors the industry. The AGD is a separate entity, independent from NSGC and the industry operators, and ensures that all gaming regulations are followed.

Atlantic Lottery Corporation and Great Canadian Gaming Corporation run the day-to-day operations of the various gaming business lines in Nova Scotia. Atlantic Lottery is the operator of ticket and video lottery products, providing a mixture of Scratch'N Win, draw games, sports betting products and video lottery to Nova Scotians. Great Canadian Gaming Corporation has two premier entertainment destinations, Casino Nova Scotia - Halifax and Casino Nova Scotia - Sydney. These first-class facilities offer customers a broad array of gaming opportunities, food and beverage, and exciting shows and entertainment.
