Frequently Asked Questions
1. What websites will BetStopper block?
The software blocks online gambling content only. It does not block other websites
that may be deemed inappropriate. As a result of this narrow focus, it is a
unique product that has an improved capability to work specifically and effectively
to block gambling websites. Testing has revealed that BetStopper is
94 to 99 per cent effective at blocking gambling websites, while existing products
are only 56 to 79 per cent effective at blocking gambling sites.
2. How do I know if BetStopper will work with my Internet Browser?
The BetStopper software is browser independent, which means it is compatible
and will work with all Internet browsers.
3. Are there any "gaps" in the technology I should be aware
of?
BetStopper has been vigorously tested in an effort to make it the most
effective program on the market at blocking online gambling content however,
as is the case with all technology, it cannot be expected to be 100%
effective. Parents/caregivers are always encouraged to monitor their
children's online activity. BetStopper is able to filter online traffic,
but is not capable of blocking peer-to-peer connections or gambling simulation
games that are installed on home computers and not connected to the Internet.
4. Do I have any control over what sites are blocked or allowed?
The software allows parents/caregivers (using their administrator account) to
temporarily override individual sites their children have tried to access but
that they approve of. In addition, they have the ability to submit a website
address directly to the software provider for review if they think it should
be permanently "blocked" or "allowed" for all users of the
software.
5. What will happen if someone tries to access a blocked site?
A dialogue box will appear that says "The Internet resource you a trying
to access has been blocked." Users have the option to select "OK"
or the "Override" function, which requires that the administrator
password be entered and allows the user to then view the webpage for a period
of time specified by the administrator.
6. My child is trying to access a website that is blocked, but I approve
of my child visiting this site. What do I do?
Parents/caregivers are able to temporarily override individual sites their children
have tried to access by clicking the "Override" button on the dialogue
box that appears. Enter your administrator password and select the length of
time that you would like the site to be allowed.
7. I've come across a page that is being blocked, but I know that it
does not include gambling, wagering or gambling simulation activities. What
do I do?
Open the BetStopper preferences screen and choose "Site Review"
from the options. This allows administrators to submit a website address directly
to the software provider for review if they think it should be permanently "allowed"
for all users of the software.
8. My child has accessed a gambling site that I think should have been
blocked. What can I do to make sure that it is?
Open the BetStopper preferences screen and choose "Site Review"
from the options. This allows administrators to submit a website address directly
to the software provider for review if they think it should be permanently "blocked"
for all users of the software.
9. Can I monitor my child's online activity to see if they've tried
to access any gambling sites?
Once BetStopper is installed, every web site that anyone visits or
tries to visit on that computer is logged by Advanced Internet Management (AIM)
and is stored on their central server for three days. If you have the reporting
feature in your BetStopper preferences enabled, you have the ability
to access these logs by visiting http://accountability-report.com/nsgc.
Because the reports are stored on the AIM server and are available on this website,
they can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection. All you
need to view the reports is your administrator username and password.
10. What will the reports tell me?
Every site visited for the last three days will be broken down by user. By visiting
the reports page, you can select whether to view the activity of one user or
all users and a list of all sites that were visited, only the allowed sites
or only the blocked sites. You can also select the option to have these reports
automatically sent to an email account.
11. How is my personal information and Internet activity protected?
The individual Internet activity logs are password protected on the central,
secure AIM servers and can only be viewed by individuals possessing the account
name and private password. Under no circumstances will AIM, the developers of
the Betstopper software, disclose Betstopper users' confidential
contact information (i.e. name, address, etc.) or the detailed individual activity
report data for any reason.
12. Will NSGC or the researchers see what websites I am visiting?
Absolutely not. The individual Internet activity logs are password protected
on the central, secure AIM servers and can only be viewed by individuals possessing
the account name and private password. Under no circumstances will AIM, the
developers of the Betstopper software, disclose Betstopper
users' confidential contact information (i.e. name, address, etc.) or the detailed
individual activity report data for any reason.
